Bexar County, like many urban areas, plays a pivotal role in providing healthcare to its uninsured residents through the University Health System. However, a recent analysis reveals that the county's charity care spending is a smaller share of taxes levied compared to other Texas metro areas, suggesting that the funds may not be fully reaching the communities most in need. Low-income communities and communities of color are often the hardest hit by inadequate healthcare funding, and these areas are already dealing with systemic challenges, from poor access to healthcare to environmental factors like PFAS contamination in drinking water. To address health disparities, Bexar County must reassess its spending and policy structures to ensure charity care resources are directed toward the residents who are most vulnerable and face multiple barriers to health and well-being, including access to safe water, nutritious food, and quality healthcare.
